What does PWD stand for ?

The Full form of PWD is Public Works Department. PWD is a government department in India which is responsible for construction and maintenance of public property like Government building, roads, bridges, public transport, drinking water systems and other more activity .

The Public Works Department is the central authority as well as state agency that looks into all kinds of public sector works of construction and maintenance in India. The Central Public Works Department of India usually referred to as the CPWD .

CPWD was founded in July, 1854 when Lord Dalhousie established a central agency for execution of public works and set up Ajmer Provincial Division. CPWD has professional expertise in disciplines including Architecture, Structural designing , Engineering, Project Management coupled with comprehensive experience in Designing , Execution and maintenance .CPWD has been serving the nation for last 164 years and has executed many of works in difficult and demanding geographical and climatic conditions.

For each state, there is a separate PWD which has further geographically distributed Divisions, Sub-Divisions and Sections. Like there is a separate PWD for Punjab, Himachal Pradesh , Rajasthan, Kerala, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and more.

In Each state of India PWD departments has almost the same responsibilities, which includes: Design and Construction of all public works undertaken by State Government, Design and Development of Roads, Safety provided on Roads, Maintenance of road , bridge and building works has been done by PWD .

The major development work like such as the construction of roads, bridges, water tank, etc. was originally conducted by the military. This started with the Pioneers and then by the Public Works Department of the Town Major’s List (Bengal & Bombay) or the Effective Supernumeraries (Madras).

In the mid-19th century, much of the responsibility for public works was then passed over to a special section of the Indian Civil Service. Public Works Department (PWD) is a government department of state as well as center Public Works Department (CPWD) which is responsible for construction and maintenance of Government infrastructure like roads, public government building, bridges, public transport, drinking water systems
