The Full form of JPG/JPEG is Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPEG is generally known as JPG. Full form of JPG/JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group, a joint working group of International Standardization Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is a standard basic method of compressing graphic images. It is used most often with its filename extension .jpg or .jpeg. It is generally used to compress digital images. It is a lossy compression technique because some information is lost while compression. It can reduce up to 5% of the real size with the loss of some information.

JPEG/JPG is mostly used to send photographs on the internet because of its great compression technique it reduce some of its size. It supports a maximum image size of 65535×65535 pixels. JPEG file format is supported on the internet with the file suffix “.jpg”. It is also used as a term for any graphic image file created by using a JPEG standard.

The actual JPEG specification published in 1992 implements processes from various earlier research papers and patents drafted by the CCITT (now ITU-T) and Joint Photographic Experts Group.  The major basis for JPEG’s lossy compression algorithm is the discrete cosine transform (DCT),  which was first proposed by Nasir Ahmed as an image compression technique in 1972.

Specifications of JPEG/JPG

  • JPEG was published by the Joint Photographic Experts Group.
  • Various file formats are possible by the conversion of JPEG.
  • Extensions which are most of the time used for JPEG file format are: .jpeg, .jpg, .jpe, .jfif.
  • JPEG may operate compression and decompression on an image to convert it into a stream of bytes and back into an image again. The conversion of image by compression and decompression into stream of bytes and back into an image is described by specifying the codec by the JPG standards.
  • The data file format is unconstrained from resolution, image contents and aspect ratio.
  • 29 unique coding processes are contained by JPEG into its scheme.
  • In ISO standard 10918, JPEG file format is specified.
