What is GIF ?

The full form of GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It is a bitmap image which have a file extension .gif. It is largly used for still images and animations on the internet . It was 1st time introduced by CompuServe in 1987. The main motto of its development is to develop a platform independent image format. GIF images are compressed by using Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique. This technique is used to reduce the file size without degrading the quality of the image ans size of image .

GIF images uses Eight bit format which supports 256 colors. These colors cannot be mixed to make other new colors. It is widely popular on internet due to its small size and portability feature. It is considered best for line art with specific colors, images with large flat areas of color and for images that required to be animated.

Important Details of GIF :- 

GIF pictures utilizes 8 bit format which supports 256 colours. These colours can’t be use to make new colours. It is well known and widely used on web because of its little size and versatility highlight. It is viewed as best for line art with limited colours, pictures with enormous level colours of shading and for pictures that should be animated.

Some Details :- There are two versions of GIF :- 
• The first version of GIF was introduced  as GIF87a in 1987.

• The second version of GIF was introduced in 1989. It was an extended       version. It was named as GIF89a and this version of GIF is used until today as     the standard format.
Uses of GIF :- 
• They are used in games.

They are commonly used in small animations and low resolution Film clips.
